Canadian Peat: A Sustainable Growing Medium for Future Generations I Education Session 183
Canadian Peat: A Sustainable Growing Medium for Future Generations I Education Session
Approved 2

Peat has long been valued by growers and consumers for its unique properties as a growing medium. However, the ecosystems from which it is extracted—peatlands—are also crucial for carbon sequestration and play a significant role in mitigating climate change. As global awareness of greenhouse gas emissions rises and sustainability becomes increasingly important, it’s vital to have the science to support the specific ways of peat extraction in North America.

The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA) aims to share with attendees over 30 years of research and insights on the responsible management and sustainable practices of the Canadian peat industry. This session will emphasize the importance of a balanced understanding of peat extraction’s environmental impact and benefits, showcasing ways the industry is evolving toward a more sustainable future.
